Useful Cordless Drill Accessories That Are Low Cost
Just the drill bits alone can probably take up a good chunk of space on the tool shelf. Here’s a closer look.
1. Socket Bit Set
Not too long ago fastening bolts and nuts was done by hand using a wrench – one wrench for one bolt size. Then there’s the socket wrench which made it easier because it worked with multiple socket bits for different bolt sizes.
The bits in a complete twist bit set can range in diameter from 1/2 an inch down to 1/16 of an inch. Bolts and dowels need holes drilled by larger bits. Screw pilot holes are drilled using smaller bits. Manufacturers use bolts or dowels to make sturdy chairs and tables. And cabinetmakers use long screws to constructs cabinets. One set is enough for all such tasks.
The bit adapter is square on one end to fit the socket bit, and hexagonal on the other end to go into the jaws of the cordless drill. Larger socket bits have 1/2″ square back opening and smaller socket bits have 1/4″. So you need two bit adapters for the cordless drill: 1/4″ and 1/2″. Once you have the bit adapter and socket bit in place, fastening bolts will be like a joyride – thrillingly fast.
2. Socket Bit Set
There are probably more than 10 different kinds of drill bits – twist bit, spade bit, auger bit, forstner bit, masonry bit… They go back a long way. Basically you should have a set of twist drill bits that range from 1/16th of an inch to 1/2 an inch in diameter.
The electric motor in the cordless tool turns much faster than how fast your hand can turn. So in effect it becomes a super-fast socket wrench, making the nuts and bolts work a breeze.
The drill bits are made of hardened steel which can drill through wood and soft metals like aluminum or brass. If you work with hard material like plastic laminate or dense hardwood, then choose bits that are coated with special alloy. Good choices can be diamond-tipped, carbide-tipped, or titanium-coated. Those kinds of bits are more durable and the cutting edges stay sharp longer.
